Come to the last of our free Lantern Making workshops in November and get family and friends involved with this wonderful event.
Wednesday 27th November, 6.00 - 8.30 p.m. Wiltshire Museum, 41 Long Street, Devizes.
Tuition and materials free - donations welcome!
Every year Devizes has a wonderful festival to herald the start of the Christmas season. Although it's a bit early we call it the Devizes Christmas Festival
because it's the night we turn on the town's Christmas lights. There are festive market stalls in the Market Place and in the Corn Exchange selling all sorts of Christmassy things and hot food and drink.
There is street entertainment, music, school choirs and best of all ... a massive lantern parade consisting of hundreds of lanterns made and carried by families from all over the Devizes area and paraded around the town.
When the parade reaches the Market Place Father Christmas climbs onto a balcony on The Bear Hotel and switches on the lights, accompanied by fireworks, fire jugglers and cheers! It's a lovely start to Christmas!
Christmas Markets from 2.30 to 8.30 p.m.
Father Christmas Grotto at the Wharfside 2.30-5.30 p.m. (free visits)
Entertainment in the Market Place from 5.00 p.m.
Wansdyke Primary School & St Joseph's Primary School carol singing 5.00-5.20 p.m. in the Brittox
Lantern Parade 6.00 p.m. from St Johns Street
Lights switch on and fireworks 6.45 p.m.
Temporary Road Closures
Temporary Road Closures will be in place in the Market Place, High Street, Wine Street and Long Street on Friday 29th November between 5.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m., and the Market Place for a further hour until 8.00pm
The road closure is in two parts, the first running from 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. and covers a wider area to allow for the Lantern Parade to make its way around the town and the second extends to the Market Place to allow for the Christmas Lights to be switched on safely.
The Devizes Christmas Festival and Lantern Parade is always a popular occasion and any disruption caused as a result of the temporary road closure will be kept to a minimum. All necessary diversion signage will be in place and access to all other car parks will be maintained.
