Street Performers '09 Shooglenifty

Shooglenifty

One of the best live bands on the international circuit. Stalwarts of the Scottish "acid croft" folk and fusion scene, Shooglenifty spend much of the time on tour, honing their skills as, and this new set is predictably classy. As ever, they mix rousing instrumentals, traditionally influenced and played on fiddle and banjo, with more contemporary rhythms, making subtle use of drum, bass and electric guitar, along with occasional samples. The emphasis is on dance tunes, but interspersed with more gentle, drifting passages, often underpinned by the solid rhythm section. It was an inspired move to include the extraordinary Inuit throat singer Tagaq, but why was she limited to such a brief appearance? A little more bravery would have been welcome.
